Origin of Women's Day

On the website of the United Nations introducing the International Women's Day, the origin of the "March 8" International Women's Day is attributed to a series of major events of women's movement in the early 20th century, including:

In 1909, the American Socialists designated February 28 as the National Women's Day; In 1910, at the Second International Copenhagen Conference, more than 100 women representatives from 17 countries, led by Clara Caitkin, planned to establish the International Women's Day, but no exact date was set; On March 19, 1911, more than 1 million women in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland gathered to celebrate International Women's Day; On the last Sunday of February 1913, Russian women celebrated their International Women's Day by demonstrating; On March 8, 1914, women in many European countries held anti-war demonstrations; On March 8, 1917 (February 23, Russian calendar), in order to commemorate the nearly 2 million Russian women killed in the First World War, Russian women held a strike, marking the beginning of the "February Revolution". Four days later, the czar was forced to abdicate, and the interim government announced that women would be granted the right to vote.

At the beginning of the 20th century, a series of socialist feminist movements in Europe and the Americas jointly contributed to the birth of the "March 8" International Women's Day.
