What are the differences between PVC and UPVC?

Time : 2022-09-07 Hits : 6

PVC (polyvinyl chloride) and UPVC (unplasticized polyvinyl chloride) are two types of vinyl. They are widely used in the construction industry due to their versatility and flexibility to produce various shapes.

PVC is polyvinyl chloride, a plastic product made of 43% oil and 57% salt. Compared with other kinds of plastic products, PVC uses raw materials more effectively and reduces fuel consumption. At the same time, the energy consumption of PVC manufacturing is also very low. And in the later stages of use, PVC products can be recycled and converted into other new products or incinerated for energy.

Stabilizers are added to PVC during production. But there are non-toxic and toxic stabilizer. It is only when toxic stabilizers such as lead salts are added that they pose a risk. But PVC products are mixed. Some small businesses use lead as a stabilizer, making it difficult for them to meet hygiene standards.

UPVC, also known as unplasticized hard PVC, is an amorphous thermoplastic resin made of vinyl chloride monomer by polymerization reaction with certain additives (such as stabilizer, lubricant, filler, etc.).

In addition to additives, the method of blending with other resins is also adopted, so that it has obvious practical value. These resins are CPVC, PE, ABS, EVA, MBS and so on.

UPVC has high melt viscosity and poor fluidity. Even if the injection pressure and melt temperature are increased, the fluidity will not change much. In addition, the resin molding temperature and thermal decomposition temperature is very close, can be molding temperature range is very narrow, is a difficult molding material.

However, they serve different functions. PVC is often used to make siding and fences, whereas UPVC is used for window and door construction. PVC is not suitable for window and door construction due to its chemical composition.

Properties of PVC

PVC is banned in Europe and in all toy products in the United States due to its toxic properties. PVC contains phosphates and BPA, which are chemical compounds used to plasticize vinyl and to give it its renowned flexibility. As a result, PVC is more porous and requires more maintenance over time to remove surface stains. Therefore, PVC is not often used in window and door construction.

Phosphates and BPA cause harmful effects to the environment and to our health, especially in the event of a fire when the chemicals become airborne. When exposed to high temperatures, PVC emits toxic fumes that can cause damage to several organ systems. PVC is still widely used in North America, as there are fewer environmental standards and restrictions in place compared to Europe.

Properties of UPVC

UPVC refers to unplasticized polyvinyl chloride. As the name suggests, it does not contain phosphates or BPA, rendering a safe product for the environment while still maintaining the benefits of a vinyl window frame. UPVC is a robust material, especially used in window construction due to its thermal efficiency and durability.

UPVC offers several additional benefits:

l Less porous surface significantly reduces maintenance.

l High energy efficiency.

l Increased lifespan to last decades.

l Rigid and does not flex.

l High impact resistance.

l Bright white frame and will maintain its colour over time.

l Recyclable material.

Our UPVC Windows and Doors

DIMEX only use UPVC in our vinyl windows and doors to offer a high-performance and safe product to our clients. Choose between white UPVC or Laminated UPVC for more colour options.

UPVC is an excellent choice for windows and doors due to its energy efficiency, durability, and cost effectiveness. The low conductivity of UPVC windows minimizes heat transfer in warmer climates and provides excellent thermal insulation in cooler conditions.

Make an informed decision about the choice of materials that is best suited for your home’s location, local climate, and architecture. The right material can make a world of difference.
